Mumbai: Local trains are the lifeline of Mumbai. However, on Thursday it also became the reason for a woman’s death.

Anita Pratap Sav was getting off a local train at Dadar stattion around 1800 hrs (IST) on Thursday, when she accidentally fell under the train.

Her body was cut into three. When paramedical staff didn’t show up, it was left to the porters to pick up Sav’s body with their bare hands and leave it on the platform.

Recalls one porter, “We didn’t get handgloves to pick the body up.”

After that, officials started passing the buck.

“It used to run at the mercy of NGO's. Railway administration is not giving any assistance,” says ACP, Railway Police, Bapu Thombre.

"I have given the memo to the police. Now, it is their responsibility. I gave them porters and a stretcher. What else do they want,” claims Deputy Stationmaster Sakpal.

Anita's body didn't even get the dignity of a stretcher. At about 2200 hrs (IST), four hours after the accident, coolies eventually moved the body on a luggage cart.

Taxi drivers refused to take the body, and with nobody to pay for an ambulance, the porters had to wheel the body to Sion Hospital more 5 five km away.

Meanwhile, for Sav's 15-year-old son, who was with her on Thursday evening, the incident was more than just red tape, it was an ordeal that he was forced to endure. The boy is too shocked too even speak.
