Mumbai: After capturing a slice of reality on the big screen with Bandit Queen years ago, producer Bobby Bedi is set to bring yet another real incident to celluloid. The film titled, Stoneman, looks at Mumbai's dreaded serial killer of the 80s.

The space around Sion hospital in Mumbai was a resting place for many homeless workers at night. However, in 1983, people who took shelter here lived under the fearful shadow of a serial killer, whom the police called ‘Stoneman’.

The ‘Stoneman’ did not fascinate director Manish Gupta only because of his crude yet effective murder modus operandi of crushing people to death with a huge stone.

“This man hasn't been arrested or identified till date. He remains uncaptured despite desperate efforts till today,” says Manish Gupta.

Starring Kay Kay Menon and Arbaaz Khan as investigative officers, Stoneman has been shot as realistically as possible. However, bringing back the Mumbai of 1983 wasn't an easy task.

“What we did is, that we selected areas in Mumbai like Ballard pier, which still hold the essence of old Mumbai and then we dressed it up to give the look and feel of old Mumbai,” says Manish.

"I remember speaking to Salman Khan and asking him if he remembered the ‘Stoneman’, and he says of course we do, as a kid,” says Producer, 'Stoneman', Bobby Bedi.

The film unfolds as a whodunit and also attempts to explore the murderer's mind, motive and identity. Unlike a regular feature film Stoneman does not have any leading ladies and does without the mandatory song and dance numbers.
