New Delhi: In Pakistan, retired ISI official Lt Gen Jamshed Gulzar Kiyani has revealed that the Kargil intrusions of 1999 had been kept a secret from then Pakistan prime minister Nawaz Sharif till the very last minute.

“I have been saying for a long time that Kargil was a blunder by Musharraf, a misadventure. Musharraf told me something and told the army something else. His claim that Nawaz Sharif had surrendered was a complete lie. I had acted to save the honour of the Pakistan army and then you know what these generals did,” says Nawaz Sharif.

For the first time, a retired general from the Inter Services Intelligence has heaped the blame on his former chief of staff for the Pakistan Army's debacle in 1999.

Lt Gen Jamshed Gulzar Kiyani says Musharraf made Nawaz Sharif the scapegoat for the surrender at Kargil.

Kiyani says Musharraf should not be allowed to go quietly. He should be impeached not only for Kargil but for other crimes including the storming of the Lal Masjid.

“I am an army man by nature and profession but still I cannot imagine throwing hand grenades on innocent people. The use of phosphorus bombs that burns human skin and flesh was not required in the Lal Masjid operation. Students and militants would have surrendered if more time was given,” says Kiyani.

Although General Kiyani's motives are not clear and while his revelations may not come as a complete surprise, there is little doubt that it will add to the pressure on President Musharraf to step down.
