ANGRY PREZ: Musharraf threatened to use constitutional powers to dissolve parliament.
New Delhi: Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf nowadays is doing what he does best – taking his detractors head on. Hours after PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif indicated he and PPP chairman Asif Zardari were moving towards impeaching him, Musharraf warned them against destabilising the country and threatened to use his constitutional powers to dissolve parliament.
Then in a blatant attempt to divide his enemies including the lawyers who want him impeached, he restored six judges of the Sindh High Court whom he had sacked last year.
It's too early to say if his attempt at sowing divisions within the Opposition has succeeded but for the moment their unity is holding.
However, PML-N leader Raja Zafarul Haq said, “Musharraf's position is getting untenable every day.”
But it's well known that Zardari and Sharif have major differences over how to get rid of Musharraf. Zardari wants a constitutional amendment that would also limit the President's powers, he's also clear he does not want to restore the deposed chief justice of Pakistan Supreme Court Iftikhar Chaudhary, whom he suspects doesn't like him.
The pundits say Zardari and Sharif are determined to sort out their differences. They also say it's time Musharraf did a rethink about himself as President of Pakistan.
“Musharraf will have to rethink his own position and his future,” political analyst Nazeem Zehara said.
In these calculations what role the army could play is considered crucial. Some believe the army won't like any public demeaning of its former chief while others believe current chief General Ashfaq Kayani would rather want that Musharraf went quietly.
