Kishore Kumar as a singer rose to fame at a time when other extraordinary singers like Mohammed Rafi and Mukesh were his colleagues. The debate, if Rafi was better than Kishore Kumar will always be on. But the truth is, Kishoreda had a mad charm about him, an individualistic streak which was unique. May it be as an actor or a singer, his individuality and his confidence in himself, shone through and that, apart from his obvious talent, made him the legend that he is today.
Kishoreda's fellow singers paid their own tribute through the new social medium, Twitter. While Asha Bhosle tweeted yesterday, In a few hours, another genius will be born. The one and only Kishore Kumar", Lata Mangeshkar tweeted in Hindi, Aaj Kishoreda ka janamdin hai. Kishoreda, bahurangi kalakar the, woh sirf ek mahaan gayak hi nahi the, utne achche sangeetkar, kavi, abhineta, film director, producer bhi the, aur sab se badi baat ek sachche insaan bhi the. (Today is Kishoredas birthday. He was a multi-talented artiste, he was not only a great singer but as good a music director, poet, actor, film director and producer. The best thing was he was a very good man.)Kishor Kumar, brother of legendary actor Ashok Kumar, was a colourful man in the true sense of the word. While his genius was apparent in his work as a singer, actor, producer, music director and director, he had an exciting personal life too. A man who followed his own heart, professional or personal matters, even at the cost of being called eccentric at times. He married four times, to Ruma Ghosh, Madhubala, Yogita Bali and Leena Chandavarkar. He was also said to be tight-fisted. While most of the movies he acted in, showed the mad side to him, the films that he produced like Zindagi, Door Wadiyon Mein Kahin belied a sensitive nature that was overshadowed by his crazy antics. But it was his singing talent which seems unmatchable even today. While his yodeling and fun songs still have the power to lift a listeners spirits, his slower songs like Manzilein Apni Jagah Hai from Sharabi or Kab Tak Andhere Man Ko Chalenge from Baaton Baaton Mein or even the utterly romantic Dil Kya Kare Jab Kisise from Julie, have left an indelible stamp on our minds. We will always miss you Kishoreda.
