Nandigram: A day after 14 people were killed in police violence in the area, Nandigram remained tense. The police had to resort to tear gas shells to disperse the protestors.

The local administration and the police have made inroads. But they still don’t have complete control of the area.

Villagers in Nandigram had blocked off their village for over two months protesting a proposed land acquisition for an SEZ.

Simmering tension and violence in Nandigram boiled over again on Thursday as protestors along with Trinamul Congress (TMC) workers set on fire a government office building.

The incident occurred shortly after Trinamul chief Mamata Bannerji visited a local hospital where those injured in Wednesday are being treated.

She was also admitted to the hospital after complaining that she was hit by a stone. She however left for Kolkata after a short while.

Police also had to use tear gas and fire in the air to control agitated relatives of the injured.

Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee termed the Nandigram violence as unfortunate, while speaking in the state assembly.

But the pressure has been building on the Chief Minister. Calcutta high court has ordered a CBI inquiry into the police firing that has claimed 14 lives so far.

The Calcutta high court in a suo moto action has ordered a CBI inquiry into the police firing.

The West Bengal Chief Minister welcomed the court order.

State Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi visited the injured at a hospital in East Midnapore. He repeated his Wednesday’s statement, expressing shock and anguish at the violence.

For residents of West Bengal this means a daylong bandh on Friday and a postponement of the CBSE and ICSE exams.

The West Bengal Chief Minister defended the police trying to enter Nandigram on Wednesday, saying no state could accept absence of rule and law in any part of the state.

Amidst a walkout by opposition parties, Buddhadeb made a statement in the Assembly terming the incident unfortunate.

He further said for two and a half months, the administration could not function at Nandigram.

Buddhadeb reiterated that the SEZ would not be set up there against the wishes of people.
