New Delhi: Gagan Narang is now the No.1 shooter in the world in men's 10 metre air rifle category.

According to the International Shooting Sport Federation's latest rankings, Narang's rating points of 1184 are 20 ahead of Athens Olympics gold medallist Qinan Zhu.

Narang's recent impressive performances catapulted him to the top as he jumped 18 rungs for his career-best rank.

He became the first Indian shooter to have qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympics after winning the gold medal at a recent World Cup in China.

The 22-year-old has had several podium finishes in the last few months including four gold medals with record scores in the recent Commonwealth Games at Melbourne.

Narang's best rank earlier was eighth which he achieved last year.

In the men's double trap, Olympic silver medallist Rajyawardhan Rathore, with rating points of 689, is in the sixth position.

In the women's section, Kuheli Ganguly made her debut in the rankings list, being 20th in 50 m rifle 3 positions while Tejaswini Sawant and Avaneet Kaur Sidhu also entered the list to be 22nd and 34th respectively in the 10 m rifle event.
