No civilised govt steals land from people, says Buddha

RED-FACED? Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for the first time will indeed heal the pain of many affected people.
Other stories in the section:
Nandigram: West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee made his first visit to Nandigram after the battle-over-land-acquisition there and drummed up sympathy in true CPM style for the families who lost near and dear ones.
"People of Nandigram don't want violence. We want peace. Under no circumstance will there be land acquisition in Nandigram. We will not build factories in Nandigram," he said.
The 'hammer and sickle' dominated proceedings as Buddhadeb and other Left leaders distributed cheques worth Rs 2 lakh each to 29 families who had lost bread-earning members. The money came from the CPM state committee.
And some of the beneficiaries who got money, like Kalpana Das, whose husband was killed in the violence, are now blaming the BUPC for the death of their loved ones.
Nandigram was burning for the last 11 months and a visit by Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee for the first time will indeed heal the pain of many affected people and bring back peace in Nandigram.
But far removed from the Red canopy, inside the villages of Nandigram, it was a day of silent protest for the BUPC supporters. Many across Nandigram decided to stay hungry and not cook, clearly sending out the message that Buddhadeb had to reach out much more.
"He's not come for 11 months. I don't know why he has come now. Even after he's come, he's compensating people who have done the killings, hurled bombs for the Left," people said.
Clearly Nandigram, for the Left, might remain a long march.
