LEFT REJECTS ALLIES' PLAN: Left says if the agreement is taken to IAEA, operationalising it will be on auto pilot.
New Delhi: As the Congress-led coalition grapples with the Indo-US Nuclear deal issue, it now appears that the left has rejected the allies' formula to allow the Government to take the India specific safeguards agreement to the International Atmoic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The allies had apparently tried to convince the Left they would stand guarantee that the Government will not take the matter beyond the IAEA. The Left has however, stuck to its stand that if the agreement is taken to the IAEA, operationalising it will be on auto pilot with no scope to stop it from moving forward.
There is a crucial Left-UPA coordination committee meeting on the issue on Wednesday.
The reality of the situation as it stands is that no one wants a general election at this point of time. If the Government goes to the IAEA, then it has to give a public statement that it is not going to operationalise the deal.
If there are indications of Mulayam Singh Yadav's Samajwadi Party's drift towards the Congress, then the Left is left with little option and loses its credential at the national level.
