New Delhi: If you live in any city in North India, chances are you haven’t been getting your LPG refills on time this winter.

The Singh family in the capital is having a rough time. Their gas cylinder ran out 15 days back and a replacement is still on its way. For them the problem is also in their bathroom, for the Singh's use a gas cylinder to fuel their water geyser.

“I got a cylinder after 15 days. When I wanted to book another one, he refused. He said I can only book a new cylinder after 21 days now as there is shortage,” Bhupender Singh said.

Several cities in North India are facing an acute shortage of LPG gas cylinders. While some are turning to neighbours for spare cylinders, the others are forced to buy them in black.

Residents complain that it takes at least 20 days for the cylinders bought in black to arrive.

It’s not just a domestic problem. With vehicles and water geysers also using LPG cylinders, the demand has increased. The government says it is this increased demand that is causing the entire problem.

“It’s only because of huge demand in winters and transportation problem from Jamnagar to northern region. Hope things will be settled down in next few days,” Petroleum Minister Murli Deora assures.

In the capital alone, there are nearly lakh vehicles using mostly illegal LPG cylinders. Delhi alone’s daily consumption goes up to 1.5 lakh cylinders a day.

So while authorities might be hopeful that the situation would improve soon, fact is that even a day's delay in such a heavy demand curve will cause a lot of heartburn.
