New Delhi: The Delhi government has come up with a Chalta Firta mobile school which consists of a school bus that takes teachers to children who cannot afford to go to school.

This latest venture by the state government in partnership with two NGOs was launched by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit at her residence on Sunday.

“We are targetting children who are out of school, on the streets and the working children. We are working in areas like Kashmiri Gate and Lakshmi Nagar in the Capital,” Project Coordinator at Butterflies, an NGO, Javed Rehman said.

And needless to say the big yellow bus is an instant hit with the children. They watch wide-eyed as Meena and her parrot give a lesson on cleanliness. But what they are most curious about is the book library and other multimedia facilities that the bus is fitted with.

“The educational aids are very interesting like the audio-visual film and children are very attentive to them. We have two-hour classes but it stretches to four. The children refuse to leave,” Project Co-ordinator, SBT, A K Tiwari said enthusiastically.

Still in the trial stages, the bus will travel to red-light areas, construction sites and slum clusters where children do not have access to education. The bus will cover four to five different locations everyday where sessions will be conducted for two hours each.

This mobile learning service is by far the most innovative initiative undertaken by the government under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. Not only does it bring education to the doorsteps of the underprivileged children, it ensures that their childhood is not lost.
