Srinagar: National Conference president Omar Adbullah has indicated in his blog that one of his uncles hates the words ‘India’ and ‘Indian’.
Two months after National Conference president Omar Adbullah logged on to the Blogger's world, his blog posts are ruffling quite a few feathers.
In his message posted on Wednesday, the suave Kashmiri politician writes about an uncle who hates being called an Indian.
He says in his blog, “I have an uncle who more often than not I disagree with but I admire the conviction he has - he disagrees with what happened in 1947 and subsequent events and so refuses to carry a passport. He has never applied for one. For the longest time he never left the state and only traveled by road between Jammu and Srinagar because he refused to travel on ‘Indian’ Airlines.”
According to party sources, he is referring to his 70-year-old uncle Sheikh Nazir Ahmad, who is also the National Conference general secretary.
Although Abdullah refused to reveal who he was referring to in his blog, but he doesn't see anything wrong in his uncle's stand.
“This is a free world, people are free to make their own choices. His choices don’t interfere in your day-to-day life. They don’t interfere in my day-to-day life. If it is a free choice that he has chosen to make, I don't see why people will have problems with it,” says Omar Abdullah.
He explains, ”It is not that he is carrying a gun or placing bombs in marketplaces. It is his way of expressing his sentiment and that is the way he has done it. At least it is peaceful and not bothering your life or mine.”
Abdullah, in his blog, also ridicules the separatists, who unlike his uncle criticise India's occupation of Kashmir in other countries travelling on Indian passport. He says
He says, “These are people who feel so strongly about the disputed nature of Kashmir but will happily fill a landing card and mention citizenship of India.”
With elections round the corner, many politicians resort to soft-separatism to cash votes.
