Balasubramanian It's really puzzling. Why the hell is the government acquiring land for a steel plant being set up by a private player? Government acquisition is fundamentally non-voluntary. The seller does not have an option to refuse to sell. It is therefore, by its very nature, unfair to the poor farmers. The compensation package is absolutely irrelevant.

Why does Mittal Steel not directly acquire the land from the farmers with the Government easing the registration process and ensuring a good law and order environment so that they can run their business?

KSV SUBRAMANIAN There should be clear cut guidelines in these kind of matters. All the parties should sit down and talk and arriave at a amicable solution to all these problems of acquiring land for industrial development, dams. Our parties have played enough politics with Narmada Dam and other projects. It is now the turn of West Bengal. Nobody can doubt the necessity of Narmada Dam or industrialisation of West Bengal and Orissa. But it should not be used for political scores. The concerned government should undertake rehabilitation of the farmers/people concerned without in any way causing any difficulty to them and to the satisfaction of everybody. People like Arundhati Roy, Medha Patkar etc. should be kept an arms length for they are not concerned with peoples progress and development, generation of employment etc. but promoting their own images so that they can get some awards !!!
