UN INVESTIGATION NEEDED: Benazir's aides have been insisting that she was shot dead and not killed by accident.
New Delhi: Pakistan's parliament has passed a resolution urging the government to seek a UN investigation into the assassination of leader of the opposition, Benazir Bhutto.
The National Assembly resolution, which was unanimously adopted, has been welcomed by Benazir's Pakistan People's Party.
Benazir's aides had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over the investigations conducted by the authorities and there was also a controversy over the cause of her death.
Benazir was killed in a gun and bomb attack in Rawalpindi on December 27 as she was coming out of an election rally.
"It has been the demand of the Pakistan People's Party that an investigation should be carried out on an international level under the supervision of the United Nations. So that not only those who carried out this heinous crime are brought to justice but also the perpetrators, organisers and those who hatched the conspiracy. Obviously, the fact that this resolution was passed unanimously proves that the entire nation wants this probe to take place," Federal Minister, Naveed Qamar was quoted by news agency Reuters as saying.
The previous government and the US accused al-Qaeda linked militant, Baitullah Mehsud of killing Benazir.
The British Police has been helping Pakistani investigators probe Benazir's death. They had, in February, stated that she was killed when the blast slammed her head against armour plating around the roof hatch in her vehicle, which she had stood through to wave to supporters.
However, her aides have been insisting that Benazir was assassinated and that her death was not the result of an accident.
