New Delhi: After resuming office at AIIMS, P Venugopal performed his first surgery on Saturday - and the patient was a one-year-old baby all the way from Pakistan.
One-year-old George Majid can now sleep peacefully. George, a Pakistani national had a one-inch hole in his heart. As a result, he did not gain weight and had repeated lung infection. With getting treatment difficult in Pakistan, his parents contacted AIIMS.
George’s father says, “A similar case in our village had been treated at AIIMS, so we approached the hospital and they are now doing it for free.”
Doctors at AIIMS helped the family get temporary visas to India. The family is now all praise for the hospital authorities.
His mother says, “They have taken good care of us. They have treated my child as if he was their own.”
The operation headed by AIIMS director P Venugopal, was conducted on Saturday morning and lasted 30 minutes. This is Dr Venugopal's first operation after resuming office.
Talking about the operation AIIMS cardiologist Dr A K Bisoi said, “We put a synthetic patch over the hole and have cleared the connection to the lung. He is fine now.”
George has now been shifted to the hospital's ICU. He will be under observation for the next four days. The family hopes to return to Pakistan soon.
