New Delhi: With Benazir Bhutto’s death, Pakistan was thrown into throes of a deep political and civilian crisis.

There was widespread violence in cities across Pakistan and according to government figures, 38 people were killed in rioting that followed Benazir’s assassination.

Shops, educational institutions, banks and offices remained closed for the second day on Saturday and security personnel were seen patrolling the streets in the main cities of Islamabad, Karachi, Rawalpindi and Lahore.

People were unable to buy essentials like food and fuel because of the shutdown. The Pakistan government said property worth billions of rupees has been destroyed in the violence. It also said criminals were taking advantage of the situation and that strict action will be taken against the looters.

In India too, hundreds of Pakistani citizens are stranded in Jodhpur, following the cancellation of the Thar Express from Rajasthan to Sindh.

The train, which was scheduled to leave Jodhpur on Friday night, was cancelled due to security concerns after the assassination.

The visas of most of the stranded Pakistanis are to expire in a day or two. Many of them say they don't have enough money to stay back indefinitely.
