Thiruvananthapuram: After 15 attempts to clear the qualifying exams, Manoj, a fisherman, has got what he yearned for his entire life – a government job.
The 35-year-old went fishing during the day and burned the midnight oil to study for his exams but today when he was one step away from living his dream, a cruel twist of fate has stopped him from joining his new job.
Knocked down by a car, a month before he got the offer letter from the Kerala State Electricity Board, Manoj is confined to the hospital bed, paralysed and perhaps his memory lost forever.
Today, his mother, wife and two sons are no more than strangers to him.
“My son had a lot of ambitions. It was his dream to get a government job,” said Manoj’s mother Anandavally who had lost her elder son to a similar accident in the Gulf. He, too, had suffered paralysis.
Now with Manoj bedridden, the family is in dire straits. His wife Seema said, “We have no one except him. We have no idea what will happen to all of us if he does not recover. We only hope somehow help comes by.”
Meanwhile, Manoj's friend Sabu said, “We are just pleading to the government to step in. If Manoj cannot go for work anymore then at least the same job should be given to his wife. It’s a matter of survival for the family.”
Doctors at the Alappuzha Medical College are doubtful if Manoj can recover completely, but they have not ruled out success in case of a prolonged treatment.
The Electricity Board meanwhile has extended his joining date by 60 days, but any further extension will depend on orders from the state government.
