Mumbai: With the vehicular density of 591 vehicles per square Kilometer, Mumbai has the highest number of cars on its roads, in the country. Every day 15 lakh new cars enter the city while the parking space available is just enough for 8,000 cars.

“I have to leave home early just to find parking. If I'm even a few minutes late, I don’t find parking,” said Preetam who just bought himself a new car as he got a promotion at work. Today, he circles around his office building each morning hunting desperately for a place to park this symbol of success.

A number of buildings like the Stock Exchange building do not permit any parking on their premises because of a possible security threat. And now the BMC is adding what could be the last straw, a fine on cars that park on the road as they prevent BMC sweepers from doing their job properly.

“We are unable to maintain the cleanliness of the roads, so some legislation must be passed,” Shrotriya Executive Engineer, BMC

The general public has a few questions for the BMC instead. “Whatever space was allotted for parking they have instead sold or given away on BOT basis. One instance is the Inox area which could easily accommodate 500/800 cars,” Chairman, Western India Automobile Association Nitin Dossa said.

Paying for parking can be quite an expensive proposition. In swanky upmarket areas parking lots are sold by housing societies for upto Rs 25 lakh . In an overcrowded city like Mumbai, space, even for your car, comes at a premium.
