New Delhi: Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) activists led by Medha Patkar were detained on Monday as they staged a dharna outside Congress President Sonia Gandhi's 10, Janpath residence.

Criticising the government for not taking adequate steps to rehabilitate the oustees of Sardar Sarovar Dam, about 50 NBA activists, gathered in front of Sonia's residence had demanded to meet her. They shouted slogans against the Centre.

Police had taken the protestors into preventive detention after they refused to move away from the high-security Akbar Road and took them to Parliament Street Police Station.

"We asked them to move away from the place as they were holding the protest without permission in the high-security area," a police official said.

On a convention organised by the Delhi Solidarity Group of the NBA, Patkar said on Sunday she has some "serious concerns" on the functioning of the V K Shunglu committee constituted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to report on rehabilitation of Narmada dam-displaced families.

She had refused to elaborate, as she was to address a press conference on Monday.
