Guwahati: The Assam government on Saturday announced that its planned TV channel would go on air in January 2013 and it would focus on sectors like agriculture, education, health and tourism.
This was decided at a meeting of Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi along with senior members of his Cabinet and other senior state government officials in Guwahati.
"The main aim of the channel would be to bring a progressive turn to the mindset of the youth of Assam," Gogoi said during the meeting.
Emulating his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee, Gogoi had last month announced plans to start a TV channel by his government that will present the "official" side of stories.
"I believe that the ownership structure of the channel should be based on the model of a society or company," he said adding that a final decision in this regard would be taken soon.
The meeting discussed issues related to organizational structure of the channel, besides acquisition of technical knowhow and recruitment of human resources.
Representatives of SRSG Broadcast Private Ltd made a presentation on issues related to opening a channel during the occasion.
Besides Gogoi, the meeting was attended by Power Minister Pradyut Bordoloi, Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Information Minister Basanta Das and Agriculture Minister Nilomoni Sen Deka.
