New Delhi: BJP senior leader Lal Krishna Advani has sent out a strong message to the party amidst clamour for a bigger role for Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi. Advani said that the party must build a new relationship with the minorities at BJP's National Executive meeting and added that if the party wanted to come to power, it needs to explore supporters outside the NDA's fold. Advani's message was clear that if the party wanted to win the next Lok Sabha elections it must change its political ideology.
The party must convince the voters that it would treat everyone equally not discriminate on the basis of caste and religion; he said and added that BJP must change its equation with the minorities and bring in fundamental changes in the country's development, democracy and national unity. Taking an initiative in this direction the BJP should declare a charter which promises minorities that the party would take care of their development, said Advani. He added that BJP must also explore the idea of NDA plus which must include all like minded parties who are yet to join the alliance.
Advani called Modi a leader who was being unnecessarily targeted and criticised, but he too could not stop himself from advising the Gujarat Chief Minister to ensure that minorities are not left behind. This is the first time that Advani has asked the BJP to change its political direction and ideology. It assumes significance as Modi has won the Gujarat Assembly elections for the third straight time and his stature has grown within the party. A large section of the BJP feels that Modi should lead the party in the next Lok Sabha elections.
Advani also pointed out several shortcomings in the party. He said that the delay in taking action in Karnataka and the failure to raise corruption issues outside Parliament were signs of party's weakness. It is very clear that Advani was targeting the tenure for former BJP chief Nitin Gadkari.
