Kolkata: Members of the Trinamool Congress's youth wing barged into Presidency University in Kolkata on Wednesday, ransacking its historic science lab, the Baker Laboratory, apart from assaulting a few teachers. The attack took place while classes were underway and comes a day after offices of the CPM in several districts of West Bengal were damaged by TMC workers after party chief Mamata Banerjee and state Finance Minister Amit Mitra were heckled by alleged SFI protesters in New Delhi.
Meanwhile, the National Highway 2 near Kolkata, that had been blocked for an hour in the morning by the rampaging TMC cadres, has been cleared. The rail line between Sealdah and Basirhat in North 24 Parganas, however, is still blocked.
Mamata, meanwhile, underwent a check-up at a private clinic in Kolkata upon her return. She had cancelled her meeting with Finance Minister P Chidambaram in New Delhi earlier in the day. She also apologised to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after she cancelled a meeting with him on Tuesday citing health reasons.
According to reports, Mamata had fallen ill and her minister Amit Mitra had to be hospitalised after he was reportedly attacked by a few SFI protesters outside the Planning Commission building in New Delhi on Tuesday. Mamata had squarely blamed the violence on the CPM's "dirty politics".
The CPM, meanwhile, has called an emergency meeting later in the day to discuss the situation.
West Bengal Governor MK Narayanan condemned the incident and asked the CPM to apologise to the Chief Minister. "This kind of attack on a democratically elected chief minister, the finance minister and their cabinet colleagues is unprecedented in India's modern history and is serious enough to warrant a public apology by the Politburo of CPM," Narayanan said.
