New Delhi: Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh has questioned Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's claims of being a development oriented leader, alleging that the BJP leader's claims are totally hollow. According to Digvijaya Singh Kerala is a most development state in terms of social indicators while Haryana has the highest per capita income among all the states in the country. He pointed out that both Kerala and Haryana had a Congress or Congress-led government.
Taking potshots at Modi, Singh asked if Kerala and Haryana are ahead of Gujarat then how can the Gujarat Chief Minister claim that his state was the most developed in the state. He also asked what had Modi done to justify the adulation that was being showered on him. Another Congress leader and Union Telecom and IT Minister Kapil Sibal challenged Modi and said that he would bring out the truth before the people soon.
Modi has been projecting himself as the man who has made Gujarat one of the fasted growing state in the country and where red tape and corruption have been contained. A section of the BJP is also keen on projecting Modi as party's prime ministerial candidate for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
However, another section of the BJP and some of the allies are not keen on Modi leading the party during the 2014 elections. Modi's most vocal critic has been the Janata Dal (United) which is the biggest BJP ally with 20 MPs in the Lok Sabha. JD(U) leader and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar who is in power in the state in alliance with the BJP has made it clear that he wants a "secular" leader to lead the BJP-led NDA during the 2014 elections.
Modi baiters have been targeting him over his alleged role in the 2002 Gujarat riots.
