New Delhi: Valentine's Day is the time of amorous thoughts and food is arguably a potent romantic tool in any love story, quite literally. It’s also the time when the sale of aphrodisiacs goes up. So what are aphrodisiacs or sexual stimulators? Moreover, do they make things better in the bedroom?

“These are product which are presumed to improve your sexual desire but there are many myths associated with these products,” says Psychaitrist, Fortis Hospital, Sameer Malhotra.

From the regular alcohol, to the mush chocolates, to eating 50 oysters, to love potions and concoctions, or rhino horns or the peculiar shaped fig, or overdoing Viagra – it’s all becoming a part of V-Day celebration.

“Love isn’t all about sex. There should be an element of mutual trust, care, compatibility and responsibility,” says Malhotra.

The FDA has made clear that there is no scientific evidence to prove that something like an aphrodisiac works.

Therefore, there’s no potion for passion and glances across the dinner table often succeed where Viagra fails.

Plan something romantic for the day but play it safe. Love doesn't come at the price of health and after all it’s your confidence and feelings which turn on your partner and not that snake oil.

As Shakespeare warns in Macbeth, "Don't over indulge, as it provokes the desire, but it takes away the performance."
