Mumbai: The sister-in-law of murdered BJP leader Pramod Mahajan told a court on Thursday she sent him an SMS before he was shot at on April 22, 2006 but its content was tampered with.
Sarangi Mahajan is the wife of Pramod’s younger brother, Pravin, who is accused of murdering the politician. “Pravin asked me to send a SMS to Pramod Mahajan on April 14, 2006 but I forgot. I sent the message the next day at 4.30 pm (1630 hrs IST),” Sarangi told a sessions court hearing the murder case.
Sarangi said the message was: ‘maine telephone se baat ki thi. Main aapko bata raha raha hoon kab milna hai, from Pravin Venketash Mahajan’ (I spoke on the phone. When do we meet tell me, from Pravin).
The prosecution claims Pravin sent an SMS threatening to kill Pramod. Sarangi though denies her SMS threatened Pramod and claims its text was tampered with. The prosecution, which is using the SMS to prove Pravin intended to murder his brother, rejected Sarangi’s claim.
“Her intention is to get Pravin Mahajan a reduced (lighter) sentence,” alleged prosecution lawyer Nitin Pradhan. The prosecution on Thursday applied for a forensic examination of Pramod’s cellphone and to question his campaign manager Pratap Ashar.
