Puducherry: The Puducherry Government on Friday suspended the measles vaccination programme in the Union Territory for the next two weeks as a precautionary measure following the death of four infants after they were given the vaccine shots in neighbouring Tamil Nadu.
This was announced by Health Minister E Valsaraj in the territorial assembly in response to a mention by AIADMK member A Anbalagan.
He, however, said the Puducherry Government was not procuring the vaccine from the company, which supplied it to Tamil Nadu, and the suspension was a preventive step.
"We have been getting our supplies from Serum Institute of India, Pune," he said.
However, the samples of the vials with the health department here had been sent for tests, he added.
Puducherry Government's announcement comes a day after Tamil Nadu Government halted the vaccination programme in the wake of the death of the infants.
The children died soon after the vaccine was administered in Katchur Primary Health Centre in Poondi Panchayat union of Tiruvallur District.
