Put on notice, Modi says fake killings unacceptable

New Delhi: Blaming his controversial justification of Sohrabuddin Sheikh's death in a fake encounter on Congress Chief Sonia Gandhi, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has clarified that fake police encounters "cannot be accepted" and he has never justified it.
Modi had on Tuesday, shocked the nation by saying Sohrabuddin “deserved” his death after which the Congress accused him of playing the communal card.
He then reacted to Sonia calling him a ‘merchant of death’, saying anyone using that term was insulting the whole of Gujarat.
“I had kept quiet but Sonia provoked me. I felt the need to tell Sonia the truth. I will reply to whatever issues the Congress raises and will speak in the same language they use and I have a right to defend himself," PTI reported him as saying.
“Fake encounters cannot be accepted. I have never justified it and I have always condemned it," he told Times TV channel, PTI reported.
He emphasized that he was and will be a “law abiding citizen”, and it is his democratic duty to tell the truth to people. He added that the hostile reactions to his statements on Sohrabuddin reeked of "pseudo secularism".
Dismayed that "hundreds of accusations" were being levelled against him, the Chief Minister clarified that he had not said anything negative about Sonia during his campaign and made a reference to her only to respond to her accusations.
On the Sohrabuddin case, Modi said Supreme Court should look into the realities guided by facts.
At the controversial speech delivered at Mangrol, Modi managed to whip up such a communal frenzy with his words that the crowd begin to chant "kill him, kill him" in response to Modi's question on what should have been done to Sohrabuddin.
And when the people shouted "kill him", Modi said, "Well, that is it. Do I have to take Sonia Gandhi's permission to do this? Hang me if I have done anything wrong."
