Ahmedabad: The air of uncertainty over admissions to IIM's this academic year has been cleared with IIM-Ahmedabad saying it will not implement the 27 per cent OBC reservation in the 2007-2008 academic year, if the Supreme Court stay is not vacated by the 12th of April.

The IIM-A was in a fix after the Supreme Court stayed the Centre's decision to provide 27 per cent reservation to OBCs in higher educational institutions like IITs and IIMs.

When the Board of Governors of IIM-Ahmedabad met on Saturday morning, they had to decide whether they would go by the Supreme Court order or by the directions of HRD ministry. The Board chose to follow the apex court.

IIM-A Director Bakul Dholakia said, “If there is not alteration of SC order then the admission process will not be any different from last year's.”

IIM-A is sticking to the timetable drawn by the CAT Committee for admissions in 2007. The list of candidates is likely to be announced on the 12th of April. So admissions under the 27 per cent OBC quota will happen only if the stay order is vacated and the quota cleared by the apex court before April 12.

The Board also cleared a proposal to raise the fees for its post graduate programme to Rs 2 lakh from Rs 1,77000.

IIM-A Board of Governors Chairman Vijaypath Singhania said, “Costs have risen much faster. This does not even take care of normal inflation but the board has been very conscious of the very fact that we should keep the revision of fees to within reasonable limits.”

So unless the Supreme Court instructs otherwise it will be business as usual at IIM Ahmedabad this year.

IIM-A has set the tone for other IIMs by saying they will not give OBC reservation if the SC order is not altered.
