Surat: The Railway Police in Gujarat have removed the notices from Surat railway platforms and trains, which said that north Indians were chiefly responsible for the majority of crimes committed in trains.

The police had been pasting these notices on the platforms and railway coaches to educate the passengers on how to watch out for thieves.

But one of the statements that stereotyped migrants from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh as criminals drew the ire of many north Indians.

“Most of the criminals involved in such thefts are either from Bihar or Uttar Pradesh,” the notice said.

The officials, however, maintain that even though the notices have been removed, they stand by what they said.

"We do not want to target anyone from any state, but our records clearly say that such criminals are either from UP or Bihar and so we are educating passengers," Police Inspector, Surat Railway Police, H M Patel, said.

People hailing from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are understandably furious. They say such actions by the police cannot be tolerated.

"Most north Indian migrants too have been robbed in trains. We have complained several times but no action has been taken,” Vice President, Bihar Vikash Parishad, Surat, Satish Mishra said.
