Even the cold desert of Ladakh has been taken by surprise. The region that normally sees minimal rainfall is experiencing excessive rains and flash floods this year.
Over 10 people have been killed so far and more than 1,000 are homeless after monsoons changed the face of the stark, mountainous terrain.
Seventy-year-old Purtho Runzong of Nubra Valley in Ladakh has spent the last five days watching the rising water levels. His village Umbe, which has 36 houses, is on the brink of being washed away.
“In my 70 years of life, I have never seen so much of water, so much of destruction. We used to have a bit of rainfall but never this much,” Runzong says, adding, “The last five days I have spend here trying to built stones banks and ward off water. Water here has destroyed fields, bridges houses. It is out of control.”
