Ratnagiri village tackles landslides threat

LAND IN TROUBLE: Fongoos is not only facing the monsoon fury but the threat of landslides.
Foongoos (Ratnagiri): Fifty- year-old Dilawar Qasim Khan digs desperately to save his house.
He makes a desperate attempt to protect his life’s savings from the rocks that could tumble down from the hills just above.
“Where will we run if rocks tumble down? Water pours in from both sides,” says Khan.
This tiny hamlet Foongoos that is 36 km from Sanghameshwar in the Ratnagiri district is stuck between the devil and the deep sea.
There are chances of a landslide on one side and the fear of rising water of the Khedakhadi rivulet on the other.
“No administration or military help has reached here,” says Dy Sarpanch, Fungoos, Sanjay Atmaram Desai.
While the waters have begun to recede in most parts of Maharashtra, including Chiplun, Khed, Mahad and Govalcourt, for the people in Foongoos, the receding backwaters only spell more fear.
