CREATING FUSS! Rushdie says the controversy surrounding Fitna is a fuss about nothing.
New York: A controversial film by a right-wing Dutch MP equating Islam with violence posted on the Internet, has been banned from screening in public, but Muslims across the world are up in arms.
The controversial film by Dutch MP Geert Wilders is now there for the world to see on the Internet.
The right-wing politician posted his 17-minute-long film Fitna that is allegedly critical of Islam's holy book, the Koran.
The film however, has found support from none other than the author of the controversial book Satanic Verses, Salman Rushdie.
Anirudh Bhattacharyya of CNN-IBN spoke to the author in New York. Satanic Verses, when first published in 1988 had created a huge stir across the world with Muslims accusing Rushdie of blasphemy.
Rushdie defends Fitna saying that all the controversy is a fuss about nothing.
Anirudh Bhattacharyya: There has been a lot of controversy in the Curt While and the Dutch Cong men, and his film Fitna, what is your take on it?
Salman Rushdie: I think it's pretty interesting that since the film was posted on the Internet, the controversy has more or less stopped. People have seen it and found that it is not as inflammatory as it was supposed to be, it’s a fuss about nothing.
There is a bit of provocation but any free society and provocations are sometimes seen as valuable. Now that people have seen the film the problem seems to have vanished.
