New Delhi: He may have been in news of late for speculation over his contesting the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls, but underworld don cannot wish away his murky past however hard he may try.

Salem - under scrutiny in connection with a six-year-old extortion case –failed to appear in a Delhi court, forcing the judge to issue a fresh production warrant against him.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Seema Maini issued a fresh warrant and directed the Superintendent of Arthur Jail in Mumbai to ensure that the don deposes before the court on April 17.

News agency PTI reports that the court also issued fresh warrants against Salem’s three co-accused - Ishtiyaq, Sabiq and C P Rai – currently lodged in Bhopal jail.

The Superintendent of Bhopal Jail has also been alerted to produce the men before the court on April 17.

These men have allegedly confessed that Salem was operating from Dubai when the incident took place.

The case dates back to six years and Salem is accused of allegedly demanding money from a south Delhi businessman.

This is the second time Salem has failed to appear before the court. The first order to this effect was issued on February eight, but a Mumbai court stayed his production when the lawyer pleaded on security grounds.

Delhi Police has sought his custody in two extortion cases and another case of assault.

Though there are four cases registered against him in Delhi, PTI reports he can be tried in only three cases, which were mentioned in the extradition agreement with Portugal.
