Jammu: An encounter between LeT militants and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir ended after a 12-hour gun battle in the Samba sector.
It's the same area that saw an infiltration bid two days ago.
Villagers in Keli Mandi village woke up to gunshots on Sunday morning. Two militants had entered the house local politician Hoshiar Singh and opened fire.
Singh and his wife were killed on spot, and two family members injured. Even as security forces rushed to the spot, the militants entered the house of villager Ramesh a few meters away.
And took five people in one house and three in the adjacent building hostage.
The gun battle between security forces and the militants went on for over 12 hours.
In the course of which a local photojournalist Ashok Sodi and an Army jawan were killed. A woman in the adjacent house also died in the cross fire.
The final toll was five dead and 12 injured. The encounter comes close in the heels of major infilitration bid at the international border on Thursday.
With the Amarnath yatra set to begin next month and state elections later this year, there are fears of heightened militant activity.
