Sarabjit's family hopes of reunion soon

Amritsar: Indian national Sarabjit Singh could well walk home free after spending 18 years in a Pakistani jail.

With the Pakistan government staying Sarabjit's execution indefinitely, his family in India is celebrating the good news.

Sarabjit's family has all the right reasons to celebrate and Saturday was a very special day for the family in the Bhikhiwand village of Punjab.

The Pakistan government has stayed Sarabjit's execution for the second time in two months, but this time indefinitely.

While, this could very well mean that he still gets life imprisonment, his family is hopeful that he will return home.

" I thank God and I’m sure he will come back soon. I want to thank the Indian government for all their help," says Sarabjit's sister Dalbir.

And it's not only the family that's celebrating; the entire village seems to be joining in.

One of Sarabjit's daughter Poonam says, "We will burst crackers, distribute sweets and go to the gurudwara."

It's been nearly 18 years since they last saw their father and Sarabjit's daughters are already planning a rather unique reunion.

"We plan to get my father and mother married again when he gets back," Swapandeep, Sarabjit's other daughter, says.

Sarabjit's lawyer Rana Hamid is also optimistic as the ruling Pakistan People's Party is openly opposed to the death penalty. The party had recently called for relief for all prisoners on death row in Pakistan.

And for now Sarabjit's family is keeping their faith strong and hoping for the best.
