Bhikhiwind (Punjab): Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh's family leaves for Pakistan on Wednesday in a last ditch attempt to persuade authorities there to commute his death sentence.

Sarabjit’s 18-year-old daughter Poonam, her mother and aunt will leave for Lahore on Wednesday. Says Poonam, “I've made a sketch of my father and I will gift this to him.”

For her sister Swapandeep Kaur too, it’s an emotional moment. “I'm waiting to see my father and hug him. We're sad we will be seeing him under such circumstances,” she says.

The family will travel to Lahore to see Sarabjit at the Kot Lakhpat Jail in Lahore. They plan to meet Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Syed Yousef Raza Gillani with a final appeal to spare Sarabjit's life.

The family is engaged in elaborate preparations for their journey.

“We're making all his favourite dishes for him: bhindi, karela and kheer.

Sarabjit's daughters have also bought 18 rachis for their paternal aunt Daljeet Kaur to give to her brother, one for each year they have been apart.

Perhaps seeking divine intervention, the family also intend to offer prayers at the Sikh shrine at Nankana Sahib and Panja Sahib.
