New Delhi: When artist Satish Gujral turned 80 this year, it seemed the right time to put across a retrospective of his works.
With Behold the Man, the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi did just that.
The flight from a struggling artist to one who's among the best selling in the country has been easy for Satish Gujral -- simply because he has let his colour palette do all the story telling for the last 58 years.
In the retrospectives of most artists, it is the forms and the styles that keep changing.
However, in Satish Gujral's retrospective, what is most noticable is the striking transition from blue, gloomy pictures to pictures of joy.
And that's a great way to end things.
His sketches dating back to the late 1940s talk of misery, migration and suicide.
As the years passed, he infused colour in his works and gradually the forms changed to merge into one another.
This eventually became Satish Gujral's signature style.
"Most artists, once they invent their style, follow it all their life. I do not believe in it because I have chosen to create for myself and not for others," says he.
With that defiant spirit, little wonder that this show is titled Ecco homo - Behold The Man.
