THE FIGHTER: Satyendra Dubey was shot dead on November 27, 2003, in Gaya.
Patna: One of the suspects in the murder case of whistle blower Satyendra Dubey escaped on Monday from police custody in Patna.
The incident took place on Monday morning when 19-year-old Uday Kumar Chaudhary and two other accused were being taken from the Beur Jail to a Patna civil court. Kumar escaped before he could be produced before a special CBI judge.
Police say Chaudhary escaped after removing his oversized handcuff outside the courtroom and escaped. This is second time Chaudhary has given the police a slip. He had escaped in December 2006 too.
The police have launched a search operation to recapture him. The two policemen who were escorting the accused are also being questioned.
In September 2005, another accused in the same case, Mantu Singh had fled in a similar manner.
On both occasions the accused were nabbed within one month but the trial was halted while they were absconding.
The 31-year-old Dubey, an Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur civil engineering graduate, was working with the National Highways Authority of India.
He was working on the Golden Quadrilateral at Koderma (Jharkhand) when he wrote a letter to the Prime Minister's Office about corruption and poor quality of work.
In the letter Dubey had named some people and companied and had requested that his name be kept a secret as he feared that his life would be in danger if the contents of the letter became public.
The letter was received by the PMO on November 11, 2002. But the letter and his identity were leaked and on November 27, 2003, he was shot dead in Gaya (Bihar).
