No tea? Well, no divorce either!
A man appealed for divorce in Delhi High Court on grounds that his wife had denied serving tea to his family.
Patna: Alcohol, anger and three words have turned into a deadly cocktail for Bihar-resident Akhtar, who has been separated from his wife and children for the last 20 days.
Akhtar’s fault: in a fit of alcohol-fuelled anger, he shouted talaq (divorce) thrice at his wife Sakina during an argument, which was overheard by neighbours.
"I was inebriated and didn’t realise what I was saying. I don’t even remember how many times I uttered the word. But villagers insist that I said it and forced my wife to say it too,” says Akhtar.
What started off as a domestic squabble is now a public embarrassment, being brought to a conclusion by the villagers, much against he couple’s wishes.
While Akhtar and Sakina say they want to stay together and have no problems with each other, the local maulvis (Muslim clerics) have decreed them to be divorced.
According to Islamic law, for the duo to stay man and wife, Sakina has to marry another man, stay with him for at least four months, divorce him and then marry Akhtar again.
“He said it in a drunker stupor. We want to stay together but the society won’t let us,” says Sakia.
The local clerics are determined to ensure that the divorce is enforced.
“There is no question of staying together. They will be divorced instantly,” says cleric Imanul Haque Khan.
The future of the couple’s married life will be decided by their neighbours and maulvis, who will take a call on whether the wife stays with her man or if the children can have their father back home.
