Over 24 people were injured in a grenade blast near Banihal in Jammu.
New Delhi: After the eight-hour shift at HCL’s Noida BPO, it is time for 21-year-old Surabhi to head home. And she will travel in a cab hired by the company.
The safety of women employees traveling in these cabs especially at night has come into focus after recent cases of rape and murder in the BPO industry.
And it has become the talking point. The Supreme Court again on Thursday allowed the prosecution of former director of Hewlett Packard Som Mittal, for negligence after the rape and murder of his employee Pratibha Srikanth Murthy by her cab driver in 2005.
But will holding the CEO responsible change things?
“I don’t think that CEOs sitting in their chairs can do anything. It's upto the administration and the team as a whole to ensure that women reach home safely after a day's work,” says Surabhi.
The general feeling among women employees is that instead of targeting the CEO, BPOs should firstly verify the credentials of the cab driver, send a security guard along with them especially if a woman is being picked first or dropped last.
But others choose to fix responsibility on the boss.
“One person needs to be responsible only then will he take extra care to ensure that everyone is safe. One person has to be accountable,” says a call centre employee.
While employees differ in their opinion on whether holding the CEO responsible for security lapses will actually help the situation on the ground?
The senior management however, has chosen not to comment on the Supreme Court ruling.
