New Delhi: Seven people, including two children, died and several others were injured when an illegal under-construction shopping mall collapsed in Delhi on Saturday. Rescue operations are on, as many are still feared trapped under the debris.

Most of the victims were labourers involved in the construction work.

The mall, which was being constructed in East Delhi's Bhrampuri area, also took down with it an adjoining house injuring its residents and killing their two children.

“This building took down our house with it killing my nephews,” victims’ relative Zameer Ahmed says

The illegal four-storey construction collapsed not just because of the poor construction material, but also because the builder simultaneously started digging the basement and adding a fourth floor, which ultimately resulted in the pillars caving in.

Fifteen fire tenders were immediately pressed into service and four disaster management cranes struggled to clear the rubble. Over 20 people were taken out of the debris. The injured were admitted to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital.

“We have registered a case of culpable homicide, causing destruction of public property and negligence against the owner Rajiv Garg,” DCP North Easy Rajeev Ranjan said.

Meanwhile, the builder and other co-owners are absconding. The government has announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each for the family of the dead and Rs 50,000 for the injured.
