SHOCKING TRUTH: The trafficking of minor girls by their own parents is just the tip of a sordid iceberg.
Hyderabad: The shocking expose of minor girls being forced into prostitution by their own parents has led the National Human Rights Commission and the Andhra Pradesh government step into action.
On January 29, CNN-IBN showed footage of Nirmala and Chinna Rao, just one of the many parents in Rajamundry district of Andhra Pradesh, offering their minor daughters to pimps for Rs 12,000.
After the story was aired, police arrested 13 people including parents of the minor girls involved in the sex racket. Special teams have been sent to Mumbai, Chennai, Bellary, Pune and Kolkata for further investigations, said police officials. The state government has assured that it will take necessary steps to curb the trafficking of minor girls.
"CNN-IBN investigation has given a boost to our work. We will take all measures to rescue girls from being trafficked," said Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, Andhra Pradesh.
The National Human Rights Commission has also taken notice of the racket based on the special investigation story.
"After seeing the media reports one shown by CNN-IBN, the commission has decided to take suo-moto cognizance of the matter and take appropriate steps in this regard," Shivraj K Patil, Chairman, NHRC said.
The NHRC told the channel that the Rajahmundry racket is a strong case that will be used to understand and change the current situation. The state government too has promised to reach out to self-help groups to bring about both social and economic change in the area.
The trafficking of minor girls by their own parents is just the tip of a sordid iceberg. The commission has also revealed that Andhra Pradesh is the biggest supplier of minor girls in this racket.
