Thrissur: The in-house magazine of a college in Kerala has got into some hot water over its efforts at promoting safe sex. The magazine cover has a picture of four children looking at a poster of a couple making love.

Students Federation of India (SFI) – the students’ branch of the CPI-M - who published the magazine, maintain it was their way of spreading sexual awareness and reinforcing the need to respect “womanhood” in campus.

Everyone only noticed the sexual posture in the cover page. But nobody noticed the photo of four young children who watch the scene. We have given the articles on sex deviations and the excess use of mobile phones,” says college chairman T M Shinoj.

But the management, who also happen to be the clergy, was scandalised.

“We were never given a chance to see the manuscript. We have asked them to change at least the cover page if they want to circulate it. We cannot allow such liberties in an institution like this,” says college principal Devassy Panthalukkaran .

The Congress-backed Kerala Students Union (KSU) is also up in arms. KSU President, M Peter, says, “The students have openly protested against such a magazine. They take it to their homes only after removing the cover page. Such a thing should not happen again, so we have registered a case.”

The Thrissur Munsif court has sent notices to everyone who had a role in bringing out the magazine, including the college principal.
