New Delhi: Former Bangladesh prime minister and Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina now finds herself behind bars after she was arrested from her Dhaka home early Monday on charges of extortion.
A court later rejected her bail plea and remanded her to judicial custody.
"We have not heard the verdict, but I know that the court rejected the bail petition," said lawyer Dip Moni.
Hasina is presently facing trial in three extortion cases filed by a businessmen in 1998.
In April, police had charged her with abetting in the murder of four political opponents, and a court issued a warrant for her arrest on that charge but it was later withdrawn.
However, Hasina has consistently denied these charges, saying they are aimed at keeping her from contesting the country's next elections.
"They should hold election as soon as possible. They are stalling the process. I have no problems if they declare my income and assets. There is no alliance with the BNP,” Sheikh Hasina had told CNN-IBN earlier.
Sheikh Hasina's arrest comes days after she took on the military backed interim government in the country.
She had alleged that intelligence agencies were overstepping their briefs.
Meanwhile, Hasina's arch rival Begum Khaleda Zia may also face arrest soon.
