LAWFULLY SPEAKING: Sheikh Hasina is suing the airline for 'unfair' and 'wrong' treatment.
London: When former Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina finally leaves London for Dhakha on Sunday, it won’t be on a British Airways flight.
Hasina is suing the airline for £ 1 million, what she says, was 'unfair' and 'wrong' treatment.
British airways refused to issue her a boarding ticket on April 22, after receiving notification from the civil aviation authority of Bangladesh.
However, Hasina's lawyers say, that civil aviation department is not an immigration authority and hence their order was invalid. This means that British Airways was following orders but from the wrong authority.
“British Airways got a notification from the civil aviation authority which is not the immigration authority,” said Sheikh Hasina's legal adviser, Justice Shamsuddin Choudhury.
A legal notice has been served and British Airways has two weeks to respond.
Meanwhile, Sheikh Hasina has other things on her mind. Since political activities are banned under the present government, there may not be big rallies or speeches, but she says working to restore democracy and demand elections will be top on her agenda.
“I have been demanding elections. I have fought for elections and that is what is important. People should have the right to vote,” said Sheikh Hasina.
Sheikh Hasina is bidding farewell to London but it's the welcome party in Dhaka that she is looking forward to. The real challenge will begin when there next week.
