New Delhi: There's trouble brewing for Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief, Raj Thackeray. The Mumbai Police have issued a notice warning him to tone down his rhetoric.

The notice comes days after Thackeray relaunched his tirade against North Indians at an MNS rally in Mumbai last week and says the MNS chief must refrain from committing cognizable offences through his speeches and writings — which were likely to create law and order problems.

Raj Thackeray refused to accept the notice forcing the police team to paste it outside his Shivaji Park residence. If the leader fails to abide by the notice, it can be held against him in court.

The senior police officer who pasted the notice on Raj's residence late on Thursday evening stated that the notice says a certain section of the society feels insecure in the wake of recent events.

"This is basically a preventive notice," the police officer was quoted by news agency PTI as saying.

The notice has been served under the provisions of Section 149 of the Criminal Procedure Code and can be used against Raj in a court if he commits a cognizable crime, the officer added.

The state government had earlier asked the police to probe whether Raj Thackeray's speech at his rally last week was inflammatory.

Police, who had served a similar notice on Raj before his rally on May 3, are contemplating action against him for promoting enmity between different groups of people during Saturday's 70-minute speech in which he attacked North Indians.

Raj, who led a violent anti-North Indian camapign in February, was arrested on the same charge on February 13 before being released on bail.
