Mumbai: History is once again director Shyam Benegal’s inspiration. The Dadasaheb Phalke award winning filmmaker is back in the director’s chair for his new film based on the life of the Buddha.

He announced his new project at a press conference in Mumbai on Monday, where he spoke about his latest inspiration.

“The life of Siddharth is full of excitement and few people realise that. One needs to look at all these aspects because his journey has been so thrilling,” Benegal said.

The film will be co-produced by Beyond Dream Pvt Ltd and the Light of Asia Foundation. This Indo-Sri Lankan co-production will be largely shot in Sri Lanka.

“We will recreate the city of Kapilavastu where Buddha was born. Hopefully it will not merely be a film site but a permanent attraction for tourists,” Chairman, Light of Asia Foundation, Navin Gooneratne said.

While the cast is yet to be decided, the film is expected to go on floors around mid-2008 and is slated for a mid-2009 release.
