BACK TO SUMMER OF 2007: Summer of 2007 takes the role less travelled in Bollywood, social issues.
Mumbai: Though Summer of 2007 sounds like a funfilled film aimed at a young audience, the film is actually mainstream Hindi cinema's first attempt to highlight the issue of farmer suicides in Maharashtra. Starring Sikandar Kher and Gul Panag in the lead, Summer of 2007 revolves around five medical students who learn the harsh realities of village life far away from the comforts of their city.
Sikander Kher says, "We young people are so clueless. We pick up the newspapers and just open the supplements and read them. This film will be an eye opening experience."
Directed by debutant Suhail Tatari, Summer of 2007 was the paradox of India shining on the one hand and the misery of farmers living in debt on the other which drove him to make the film.
Tatari says, "On one hand you're talking about the super-economic power that India is becoming, but on the other hand, the awareness of these suicides is extremely low. It was an issue that needed to be addressed."
And these guys are not worried about the fact that film is releasing this weekend, on the dreaded Friday the 13th.
Sikander Kher says, "Friday the 13th, is cool. At least it gets the people talking about the film."
Considering that Summer of 2007 takes the role less travelled in Bollywood, the team needs all the good luck they can get.
