SAD STATS: Sikh Coalition's Amardeep Singh says 60 per cent of Sikh children in Queens suffer racial abuse.
New York: A Sikh student was assaulted and his turban pulled off by one of his classmates New York's Richmond High School.
The school has suspended the student who assaulted Jagmohan Singh Premi and juvenile proceedings will also be initiated against the assailant.
Jagmoham was injured in the attack after he was hit by a bunch on keys and taken to a hospital.
Ironically, the victim had already complained to the school authorities that that the attacker was repeatedly bullying him and had also pulled his beard asking why he didn't shave.
Sikh rights advocates say over 60 per cent of the Sikh students in the US face bias. They say the attack on Jagmohan is part of a pattern of harassment of Sikhs.
"Our organisation conducted a survey of over 400 Sikh community children over the last year and in that survey we found that 60 per cent Sikh children in Queens suffered race based teasing and name calling which also includes in some cases violence against Sikhs," Amardeep Singh, Executive Director, Sikh Coalition, says.
