Kolkata: Dhirendranath's son Kishore Kumar Roy and 24 other Indians went missing with their ship over a week ago in the Black Sea. The 75-year-old and his family have not only lost a loved one, but also their only breadwinner. For Dhirendranath, and daughter Laxmi, a cancer patient, it is a crushing loss.

“I pray to God to take my life instead. He is our only source of income. I can't see him dead and me still alive,” Dhirendranath says.

The Roy family that lives in Sonarpur near Kolkata does not even know whether their son is dead or alive.

Kishore worked as Head Chef on board the MV Razzak that disappeared while on its way from Russia to Turkey. Back home, he is a well-liked local figure. In Notunpalli his friends and neighbours are shocked by the news.

“I used to call him uncle. He used to love my son a lot, and he always had a laughing face,” a neighbour Gayatri Ghosh Sarkar says.

Now, all that the Roys have left of Kishore are his memories. Dhirendranath keeps watch each day, hoping for Kishore to walk through the door.
